Caption:
Pen and ink drawing with grey wash by J Landon. Thomas Martyn's aerostatic globe was the first British design for a navigable balloon. It included an umbrella (or parachute) to afford and easy descent should the balloon burst; a mainsail, a foresail, oars and a sail rudder to direct the machine, and grappling irons to catch in the earth and ensure a smooth landing.
